Chess is a very complex game and it can take a lot of effort to improve your ranking. If your child is very involved in chess, and they are looking to improve their ranking, then there are lots of things you can do to help them. While it might be troubling if you yourself are not that involved in chess, perhaps you find it a bit intimidating truthfully, that is no reason to not help your kid improve their ranking. In fact, there are lots of things that you can do to help your child improve their chess skills and grow their ranking (setting them on their way to becoming a grandmaster) without you yourself knowing much about the game. Here are a few ways to do it.

Beyond Books: DVDs of Great Games

One excellent way to get better at chess is to look at classic games. You can find dvds online of some of the worlds most memorable games. Your child will love to watch these. They can bring to life the game in a way that a text listing of the moves might not. So, instead of reading about Spassky vs Fischer, or Carlsen vs Kasparov. The videos will show your child how more experienced chess players handle themselves in these situations. This is an excellent way to prepare them for tournaments where they will be competing in order to raise their ranking.

Games At Any Time: Computer Aided Chess Study

Even if you cold play chess, you might not have hours upon hours to do so. This is why it is important to find a good chess program that your kid can use. This will help them to improve without having to have a person present to play against. There are A.I. based programs as well as online chess clubs that match up players from across the world.

Private Chess Teacher

Finally, a great way to improve their ranking is to get them personalized help and instruction in the form of a private chess teacher. These teachers can analyze your child's game and then go over weak spots. Perhaps they have a problem with their middle game, or maybe it's their lack of opening skills. Either way, a good private chess teacher will be able to analyze their strong points and weak points, and then address the situation and show your child some new techniques that will help them with their game.
